Giving thanks has nothing to do with taking the life of an individual who wanted to live. Will you be kind while giving thanks this Thanksgiving?
one of the lucky few
Turkey and cranberry sauce - that’s what we’ve been reduced to for Thanksgiving. It's thanksgiving for humans, but it's slaughter day for us!
Luckily I (along with some friends) came to RASTA shortly before Thanksgiving weekend of 2016.
Did you know an estimated 46 million turkeys are killed each year for Thanksgiving alone and then even more are added to this number at Christmas time? Let me put it in a human scale for better understanding- 46 million is roughly the population of Spain! How is this thanksgiving by any means? Imagine if the roles were reversed and it was humans being slaughtered in the name of a “holiday”!
The sense of relief to be able to live along with many other beautiful birds at the sanctuary is truly gratifying. But this isn't the case for the rest of our kind! 46 million, and the number is rising every year. I wish humans would find a better way to celebrate their Thanksgiving meal!
I'm Jack, and I'm a turkey with sentiments.
The RASTA Sanctuary is one of only two farm sanctuaries on all of Vancouver Island and the need for our help is constant and great! If you see value in the work that we do, please consider making a donation to help support our efforts.

The RASTA Calendar 2020 is crafted with love by a total of 7 volunteers from 3 different organisations, RASTA, Mystic Lights, and Vyugam Business Consulting & Climate Emergency Solutions, who are experts in their area of work. We would like to take a moment to thank each one of them as well as the residents of RASTA for sharing their love and wisdom with all of us.
